Swurfer - Joins The Arbor Day Foundation’s Time for Trees™ Initiative
Charleston, SC, November 6th, 2019 – Swurfer today happily announced it is joining the Arbor Day Foundation and its Time for Trees™ Initiative, a commitment to plant 100 million trees in forests and communities worldwide by 2022. As an outdoor swing company, Swurfer relies on healthy trees and bright, blue skies. The Time for Trees™ Initiative leverages trees as a simple, powerful way to reverse the damage done by climate change and addresses the urgency of preserving the necessities of life – like clean air and water, healthy food and a livable climate.
Through the Time for Trees initiative, Swurfer is partnering with the Arbor Day Foundation to drive awareness around trees as a scalable solution to the world’s most critical environmental issues. Supporting this initiative is an extension of Swurfer’s existing sustainability efforts.
“We are so grateful for the friends, family, and community that made the Swurfer dream a reality. Now we are we really proud and happy to be able to contribute back to the community and the great outdoors by partnering with the Arbor Day Foundation," said Swurfer Inventor and General Manager Rob Bertschy.
Ultimately, the initiative will seek to leverage trees to deliver countless benefits to the environment, global economies, and society, including:
· Environment: 100 million trees remove 578,000 tons of chemical pollution from the air. Forests also provide 75 percent of the world’s accessible freshwater by removing impurities and preventing erosion, and a single tree can absorb 48 pounds of carbon dioxide annually to help regulate climate.
· Economy: Trees are a major pillar of the global economy. The timber sector generates $600 billion annually and 54.2 million jobs, and forests also contribute to the recreation and tourism industries.
· Society: Spending time in green spaces is proven to improve health – reducing stress levels, blood pressure and rates of cardiovascular disease. Forests also help advance medical breakthroughs. More than a quarter of modern medicine is derived from tropical forest plants.
The Time for Trees initiative is unique in that it will be powered by corporations, communities as well as individual citizens, showcasing the simplicity of tree planting – in one backyard or at scale. As part of this call to action, the Arbor Day Foundation is also inspiring 5 million tree planters to join in this initiative through existing partnerships and community programs.
In 2015, Swurfer reinvented the tree swing, combining the best of swings and board sports. Quality build and great outdoor fun have been the simple recipe for Swurfer's success. Today the Swurfer collection is a full swing line featuring classic and new swing form factors, but all developed with premium materials and attention to every detail.

About Flybar, Inc
In 1918, toy inventor George B. Hansburg introduced America to the pogo stick and opened the original pogo stick company. In 1957 Hansburg patented the "MASTER" pogo stick with the now iconic curved handles and dual supporting bars.
Throughout the decades, the company pursued the quest for higher pogo jumps and in 2000 developed the world famous Flybar, elevating daring riders up to 6 feet high. In 2019 we took a bigger leap and acquired Vurtego, the extreme pogo stick that can fly you 10 feet high. But, we still have bounce products for all sizes and abilities; toddler hoppers, pogo balls, hopper balls and even trampolines. So, yeah, we are proud to be the Masters of Bounce.
Flybar today is not just about bounce. New products in various categories including toy vehicles, swings, sleds and scooters are all designed and developed with the passion and innovation George Hansburg first demonstrated over 100 years ago.
Earlier this spring, we teamed up with students at Charleston Collegiate School to host an art contest. Students got to paint raw Swurfer boards, which were then displayed and auctioned off with the winning prize money donated to a local children's charity.
Fortunately for Leroy Drayton, the winner of the art contest, the people who bought his board gave it back to him so he could keep his masterpiece! Of course, we gave Leroy his very own original Swurfer board so he can Swurf in his backyard, and proudly display his board art on his refrigerator with a really large magnet instead.
We had a chance to hang out and congratulate Leroy the other day and asked him a few questions to learn more about him.
What is your favorite tree?
My backyard is full of pine and oak trees. So both of those kinds.
If you could go Swurfing anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Anywhere? Hmmm. It has to be somewhere crazy then. Like the Golden Gate Bridge or Eiffel Tower!
If your Swurfer had a super power, what would it be?
I’m really interested in biological/medical engineering, so it would be cool if wounded solders could hop on board and instantly be healed. That, or it leaves a money trail behind it when it moves.
Tell us about your design. How did you come up with it?
It all was an accident really. At first I wanted to go with an Andy Warhol theme. I started with just a red board, but then I started to add some paint splatter to it. Then I thought I could add in some space elements. So one thing just led to another and I ended up with a galaxy theme!
If you could give your masterpiece to anyone famous, dead or alive, who would it be?
Albert Einstein. He would think it’s genius.
Since you’re interested in becoming an engineer, what do you think would be cool to add to the Swurfer?
I think it would be cool to have a mobile app that uses your camera, and you wear motion detectors on your body. Then when you’re filming, it can show you your moves and motion when you’re Swurfing.
You are born and raised here in Charleston. What do you love most about living here?
The peace and quiet. I love that I can walk outside my back door and be surrounded by trees. I’ve traveled and been to cities, but the vibe here is so much nicer and laid back.
How excited are you to Swurf?
Very! I can’t wait to hang it in my backyard. I’m very daring, so I plan to try all sorts of tricks with it.
What do you like to do for fun?
Just being outside! I love to play basketball and baseball with my friends, and go kayaking. When I was younger, I used to pretend I was a nature guide like Steve Irwin.
It's undeniable: one of the great things about the world we all find ourselves living in today is how quickly the internet can bring us together, no matter how far apart we live or what languages we speak.
We realized this (once again!) this week when we saw this awesome post in Dutch about the Swurfer from the good folks at WANT.nl.
I must admit: I don't speak even a word of Dutch. But Google translate gave us the idea of what they thought about Swurfing, and produced memorable English sentences like this: "With the ability to prevent and chill ways fluctuate Swurfer is rocking again cool and hip for young and old."
So, yeah, we are rocking again cool and hip for young and old. To prove it, we've added shipping to the Netherlands to our checkout options.
There's nothing that bums Team Swurfer out more than finding out that anyone is having trouble hanging their Swurfer. Sometimes it's just a matter of figuring out which branch to hang it from, which is why we signed up a local Charleston arborist to explain to you just how to look for that correct branch.
Sometimes though you just need a bit more rope to hang your Swurfer from your soar spot. So we added a Double Rope, Double Handles option to keep you covered.
Still have questions, like how to hang from a porch or a swing set? We're always available at firstname.lastname@example.org or 843-376-1895.
And once you've got it hung, don't forget to post a pic to Instagram or Facebook, and tag it #Swurfer. You might just get famous on our feed ;)
Who doesn't like (or at least dream of) riding a crystal blue wave to a smooth landing on a beach? No one, that's who.
Team Swurfer counts itself among the dreamers. The desire to give people the feeling of surfing without needing to actually ride a wave drove the creation of the Swurfer. Like skateboarding, swingboarding gives everyone the chance to ride a wave without actually having to ride a wave, only this time while hanging from a tree and with handles.
So it's natural we would look to connect with surfers, and so obvious that we would make it Surf Expo in Orlando.
Look for the Swurfer bus in the parking lot. Keep an eye peeled for Captain Rob. And get ready to see Swurfers at a surf shop near you this summer.
We are excited to say that there are currently more than 400 specialty stores across the United States (including Alaska!) and into Canada and Mexico where you can find a Swurfer, and we're adding new partners just about every day.
Check out our new store locator. We're confident that just about wherever you are you'll find a store near you filled with knowledgable and helpful staff and likely with a store owner nearby, eager to help you learn about Swurfing and give you a great look at The Swurfer. Just like us, these are small businesses owned by people with a connection to their communities who care about helping their customers find the right product for them.
